EAST GRANBY, Conn. · Motorists no longer need to wonder or worry when the "check engine" or other dashboard warning lights appear, when buying or selling a used vehicle, or when they have a concern about the condition of their vehicle. Now they can see Smart Auto Management.
 
In less than 10 minutes, for $15, Smart Auto Management or SAM scans a vehicle's on-board-diagnostics system and prints a comprehensive report that identifies any existing or potential problems with the vehicle's engine, transmission, safety systems, body, chassis, and more.
 
"It's a great day for drivers, now that we have SAM," said SAM spokesman Mario Andretti. "Every vehicle owner should see SAM when something on their dash board lights up, or in advance of taking a road trip. SAM gives you a printout of information before you take your car to a mechanic · that's valuable. And, if you see a used car you'd like to buy, SAM can tell you the real story about that car."
 
Mario Andretti will make appearances at select SAM locations in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Raleigh, N.C., the week of Feb. 12. During the scheduled appearances, motorists can receive a complimentary SAM report on their vehicles and photo-keepsakes autographed by Andretti.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA · MediaTile announced that its African distributor Tactile Technologies has released the MediaTile Cellular Digital Signage product line, named Digital-Sign-In-A-Box, for immediate delivery across Africa.
 
"We are extremely excited about bringing the tremendous communication advantages that MediaTile digital signage solutions provide to both businesses and consumers to Africa," said Mauro Mercuri, general manager of Tactile Technologies and exclusive MediaTile business partner for Africa. "With our business partner Vodacom we have eliminated virtually all of the technical barriers associated with IP-based digital signage networks and thereby opened the market to far more businesses."
 
In June, Tactile Technologies announced that it had secured an agreement with Vodacom Business Solutions, a division of Vodacom South Africa, to accelerate the market adoption of networked digital signage deployments and direct broadcast networks. The agreement enables both companies to team up and offer cellular-based digital signage solutions to retail chains, product vendors and advertisers.
 
MediaTile Digital-Sign-In-A-Box displays are configured by simply plugging them into a standard power outlet. MediaTile displays instantly connect over the Internet using Vodacom mobile 3G/GPRS services, and are individually or collectively controlled through a secure Web-based portal. MediaTile displays are available in 19-, 32-, 42- and 47-inch HD LCD sizes, including touchscreen configurations. Also available is a separate component player that can be connected to almost any pre-existing display.

LAS VEGAS · 3M will use the Check-in at 07 show in Las Vegas to showcase its next-generation full-page document scanners for kiosks.
 
According to a news release, the new 3M Kiosk Full Page Readers and 3M Kiosk ePassport Readers are designed for integration into the latest generation of common use self-service (CUSS) kiosks.
 
Used to facilitate the check-in process for airlines, hotels and car rental agencies, as well as to automate identity processing for frequent travelers and automated border control points, the new readers will offer the combined technical capabilities of 3M and Rochford Thompson in a reduced footprint. This size reduction is especially important for the latest designs of counter-top kiosks, the companies say.

Clickz.com: If patent filings are anything to go by, contextual advertising powered by Google will start appearing on digital billboards in a shopping mall near you.

The Mountain View, Calif. search marketing giant has filed a patent application for technology that lets local stores tie their stock control computers to a Google-powered ad network, a strong hint that the company is planning to expand expansion beyond Web, print and radio advertising.

Video Business: Movie download kiosks are likely to start rolling out on a trial basis at stores this holiday season now that disc burning using copy-protection technology CSS has gotten the go-ahead. Disc-burning kiosk companies and movie download services are still waiting for a formal announcement from the DVD Copy Control Assn. and an effective date (expected any day now), which will allow them to move forward with content licensing deals to make on-demand burning a reality. Walgreens, which has said it plans to launch movie kiosks in its stores but hasn't said when, is expected to be among the first retailers to bring in kiosks.

FRANKLIN, Tenn. · When it comes to paying for goods and services, consumers continue to take matters into their own hands, according to IHL Consulting Group. The group found in a recent study that North American consumers are on pace to spend more than $525 billion at self-checkout lanes, ticketing kiosks and other self-service machines in 2007, an increase from $438 billion in 2006.

"We expect that expenditures made at self-service kiosks will rise by about 20 percent this year and another 18 percent in 2008," said Greg Buzek, president of IHL Consulting Group. "Demand for self-checkout systems and other kiosks should push the dollar value of transactions to nearly $1.3 trillion by 2011."

In the IHL study, "2007 North American Self-Service Kiosks," IHL examines the increasing use of five types of self-service kiosks where payment is accepted: self-checkout systems, ticketing kiosks, check-in kiosks, food ordering and postal kiosks.

The (Malaysia) Star Online: Malaysia Airlines is deploying self-service check-in kiosks in an effort to comply with the International Air Transport Association's mandate for all air travel to be ticketless by the end of 2007.

SAN FRANCISCO  Visa and Creative Mobile Technologies announced the launch of a program to equip thousands of New York taxicabs with contactless payment readers, located in the back of the taxi.
 
New York taxis equipped with the new readers are able to accept both Visa payWave transactions as well as traditional swipe transactions. Passengers are able to include a tip to the price of the fare, and no signature is required for transactions under $25. Visa research shows more and more consumers want to use a payment card for purchases under $25 for convenience (73 percent), efficiency (44 percent) and speed (39 percent).
 
"Our goal is to bring cutting-edge technology to the New York taxi industry to increase efficiency and quality of service," said Jesse H. Davis, President and COO at Creative Mobile Technologies. "By partnering with Visa, we're able to help taxi owners and operators easily integrate a new technology and streamline their business operations."
